For millennia, hymnody has lifted the worship of God’s people. In the twenty-first century, we continue to be shaped profoundly by this rich tradition of text and tune, though its influence is sometimes obscured by what is current. While both past and present have value, these instrumental reflections remind us of our heritage and of those upon whose shoulders we stand—poets and composers whose artistry has elevated thought and stirred emotion toward God.
The compositional approach to the Sacred Solos series, featuring composer Daniel Barta, is intentionally straightforward: to capture the depth of text and tune with integrity and imagination while keeping both the length and technical demands practical. The writing is idiomatic, with each instrument handled thoughtfully and with understanding. These settings are collaborative in nature—instrument and piano serve one another, sharing the spotlight rather than competing for it. The moods vary widely. Some settings are contemplative and restrained, while others are celebratory and expansive. Distinctive musical ideas, intriguing gestures, and unexpected turns add drama in a way that unfolds much like a poignant short story.
Whether exuberant or subdued, these settings are intended to bring beauty to sanctuary and recital hall alike, offering a meaningful experience for both musician and listener.
