Timothy Shaw has a beautifully reflective way of playing traditional hymn tunes on the piano. This collection embodies that style. With directions such as “pensively,” “thoughtful,” “calmly,” “relaxed,” “lightly,” and “peacefully,” each setting gives the listener a moment to breathe and be renewed. Even the traditionally triumphal “All Creatures of Our God and King” (LASST UNS ERFREUEN) is presented in a straightforward, almost delicate arrangement that invites the listener to ponder the tune itself. There are a few unexpected entries, such as “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” (NETTELTON), written as a quasi-jazz ballad improvisation; “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” (HYMN TO JOY), a set of five variations; and “Be Still, My Soul” (FINLANDIA), which swings between minor and major tonalities. Many of the pieces are 2-3 pages long and very accessible. Overall a satisfying, lyrical collection. Downloadable files available for individual purchase.
