The Contrite Heart (Timothy Shaw) added to the Shaw Music catalog

This choral prayer is an original setting of William Cowper’s hymn, first published in the Olney Hymns collection. Working through a complex emotional and spiritual journey, the text ultimately points toward healing in God’s providence. The hymn was superscribed with Isaiah 57:15, “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite’.”

A Composer’s Roots

Sorting through old files, I came across the first piece I ever wrote: “Melody of Praise” for Handbell Choir (1989). I wrote this at the invitation of my first piano teacher, who directed a handbell choir at the small private school I attended in rural New Hampshire. Here are the score and the original manuscript, including edits in green. (I thought I had neater hand-writing when I was in seventh grade!)
