Tanka on the Trinity

triquetraIn this week between Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, you might enjoy reading these tanka on the trinity…

Before time began,
three in one yet one in three—
Father, Spirit, Son—
perfect love, in unity,
one God, for eternity.

In the beginning,
the Spirit, full of promise,
was there, waiting for
God to speak into darkness:
“Let light shine”—and all was good.

When the time had come,
an angel announced good news:
“You are God’s chosen”—
the Spirit came upon her,
and the Son stepped into time.

“See the Lamb of God,
who takes away all our sin”—
the Spirit flew down
as a dove; a voice was heard:
“This is my Son, whom I love.”

The Spirit led him
into the wild to fast for
forty days and nights.
Jesus spoke the words of God,
and the tempter fled from him.

One night, as friends slept,
the Spirit comforted God’s
only Son, who prayed:
“Father, take this cup from me,
but your will, not mine, be done.”

Fifty days had passed,
and many gathered to hear
Peter tell of him;
the Spirit, full of power,
fanned the flames of God’s Kingdom.

Before time began,
three in one yet one in three—
Father, Spirit, Son—
perfect love, in unity,
one God, for eternity.
