I suspect those of us who play for church services tend to accompany certain hymns the same way (or nearly the same way) every time we play them. I know I do! For the third week of Advent, I’ve written down my usual piano accompaniment to “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” MENDELSSOHN. This setting reminds me of how my first piano teacher accompanied Christmas carols at our school’s annual Christmas program—I always loved hearing her play, and I think I’ve incorporated much of her style over the years.
